Version 1.0.1 December 16, 2020
Preamble
This privacy policy governs the use of the software application UNIGE E-Smog ("Application") for mobile devices. The Application was created and is managed by the Theoretical Computer Science and Sensor Lab ("us") of the University of Geneva, Switzerland. The Application is a mobile application dedicated to evaluating the ability of smartphones to measure non-ionizing radiation (e-smog). It allows to perform measurements that yield approximate e-smog exposure indicators. Anonymous and clustered e-smog levels are presented on an online map on our website. The content of the website is available under Creative Commons License CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. All collected data, sent to a remote server managed by the University of Geneva, are used for scientific research on the measurement and evaluation of e-smog and exposure of communities as well as on anonymous scheduling.1. What information does the Application obtain?
User Registration
There is no user registration.Collected Information
When the user runs the Application, it allows the Application to collect information ("E-Smog Information") that is required for the evaluation of e-smog levels. For collecting this information, an action by the user is required, i.e., pressing the scan button and authorizing the upload of the data to the remote server (uploading is set by default). There is NO automatic NOR background task for collecting this information. To collect E-Smog Information, the Application requires the following device permissions: Cell Info, Bluetooth, Wifi: The Application detects antennas, bluetooth devices and wifis to determine their signal strengths and to produce e-smog level indicators from RSSI values. Geo-localization: The Application may use GPS technology (or other similar technology) to determine the e-smog measurement location and time. Network connection information: The Application may send E-Smog Information to a remote server. This requires information concerning the available network connections. Data quality assessment and extra-processing: The Application collects additional information ("General Information"): the type of mobile device used (product, model, manufacturer) and the version of the Application. This information is only used in order to be able to perform extra-processing of the E-Smog Information on the remote server. For example, we could be able to easily correct all measurements that have been carried out with the same type of mobile phone or using the same version of the Application. We DO NOT collect your Universally Unique Device Identifier (UUID) NOR any other information that could help identify a specific user.Data storage
The Application may store information locally on your mobile device using application data caches and mobile storage.2. Do third parties see and/or have access to information obtained by the Application?
General Information and E-Smog Information may be shared with third parties only in the ways that are described in this privacy statement. We may disclose General information and E-Smog Information:- as required by law, such as to comply with a subpoena, or similar legal process;
- when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, protect your safety or the safety of others, investigate fraud, or respond to a government request;
- with any people and private or public institutions that have agreed to adhere to the rules set forth in this privacy statement; the data are shared under the Open Database Licence (ODbL).
3. How we use information that are collected with the Application?
As presented before, our Application is dedicated to evaluating the ability of smartphones to measure non-ionizing radiation (e-smog) as well as anonymously scheduling requests, within a scientific context. Consequently, all the collected data are used for this purpose. Only anonymous data are uploaded to the remote server. All anonymous community data (i.e. produced by the entire user community) are then post-processed on the remote server in order to study and to display the e-smog environment, for example, to obtain e-smog maps. Because these data can be useful for the community, they can also be shared with the community, respecting the present Privacy Policy and under the Open Database Licence (ODbL).4. What are my opt-out rights?
You can stop all collection of information easily:- if you don't use the Application;
- by uninstalling the Application; you may use the standard uninstall processes as may be available as part of your mobile device or via the mobile application marketplace.
5. Data Retention Policy, managing your information
We will retain all information as long as they have an interest in the community, particularly in a scientific research context. Because all data are anonymous, we are not able to delete data produced by any specific User.6. Security
We are concerned about safeguarding the confidentiality of your information. We provide physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect information we process and maintain. For example, we limit access to this information to authorized employees and contractors who need to know that information in order to operate, develop or improve our Application. Please be aware that, although we endeavor to provide reasonable security for information we process and maintain, no security system can prevent all potential security breaches.7. Changes
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time for any reason. We will notify you of any changes to our Privacy Policy by posting the new Privacy Policy here. You are advised to consult this Privacy Policy regularly for any changes, as continued use is deemed approval of all changes.8. Your consent
By using the Application, you are consenting to our processing of your information as set forth in this Privacy Policy now and as amended by us. "Processing" means using information in any way, including, but not limited to collecting, storing, deleting, using, combining and disclosing information.9. Contact us
If you have any questions regarding privacy while using the Application, or have questions about our practices, please kontaktieren.10. Credits
The text of this Privacy Policy is in part copied from the Privacy Policy of the NoiseCapture App version 1.0 from March 7, 2017 (see https://noise-planet.org/NoiseCapture_privacy_policy.html). StartActivity and MapActivity are visually similar to those of NoiseCapture, but both apps differ fundamentally in terms of measurements, functionality and features.NoiseBay App
Our NoiseBay App is a modified version of the NoiseCapture App (see https://noise-planet.org/noisecapture.html). The NoiseCapture App is released under the GPLv3 license. In summary, we modified the following functionality:- Anonymous measurements will be collected at our server of the Theoretical Computer Science and Sensor Lab of the University of Geneva, Switzerland and will be potentially forwarded to the NoiseCapture server managed by Ifsttar and CNRS, France.
Privacy Policy
The NoiseBay App is a modified version of the NoiseCapture App. We take over the formulated privacy policy version 1.0 from March 7, 2017 by NoiseCapture (see https://noise-planet.org/NoiseCapture_privacy_policy.html) with the following modifications:
Preamble
This privacy policy governs your use of the software application NoiseBay App ("Application") for mobile devices. The NoiseBay App is a modified version of the NoiseCapture App that was created and is managed by the two French research institutes Ifsttar and CNRS. The NoiseBay App was created and is managed by the Theoretical Computer Science and Sensor Lab ("us") of the University of Geneva, Switzerland. The Application is a mobile application dedicated to the evaluation of the noise environment. It allows to perform noise measurements and, thus, to give information on your noise exposure. In addition, if you agree, you can contribute to the realization of collaborative (or community) noise maps by anonymously sharing your measurements with the community. All collected data, which can be sent to a remote server managed by the University of Geneva with the prior agreement of the user, are used for scientific research on the anonymous distribution of tasks and on the representation of noise environments and the exposure of communities to noise.1. What information does the Application obtain?
User Registration
There is no registration at installation of the NoiseBay App. Anyone can download and install it. With the installation and usage of our NoiseBay App, the user confirms to have a legal age of above 13 years and the user agrees with our Privacy Policy. Independent of the NoiseBay App, there exists a user registration on our website. The NoiseBay App is independent of the user registration on our website. The non-public information a user submits when registering as participant on our website are: user name, user email address, and voluntary non-public and non-binding information about when and where the user could collect and upload noise level data. Information about whether and when users actually send data is not collected. When registering on our website, the user chooses a private personal password. With this password, the user can log into the user area and change or delete personal data (name, email, information about availability) at any time. We communicate with our users via email. Sending data via the NoiseBay App is anonymous. This means that we do not track the sender of noise level data.User Provided Information (same as for NoiseCapture App)
